Revision activities / English study practice
Learning focus: Reading. This original Grade 11 English exercise gives you a task, a suggested response and a follow-up challenge. It is classroom practice, not an official assessment paper.
Understand the idea
An inference combines clues in a text with reasoned interpretation. It must be supported by the wording rather than by an unrelated assumption.
Try the activity
Read: Amina checked the clock twice, folded the untouched letter and walked slowly toward the office. What can you infer, and what remains uncertain?
Attempt your response before opening the guidance. Show the steps, textual evidence or reasons that support your answer; a final answer alone may hide a misunderstanding.

Show suggested answer and reasoning
Her actions may suggest hesitation or anxiety about going to the office. The clock-checking, untouched letter and slow movement support that possibility. The text does not establish why she is concerned or what the letter contains.
Follow-up challenge
Write two different plausible explanations and identify the shared textual evidence. Avoid presenting an inference as a fact explicitly stated in the passage.
Review your work
- Did you answer the question actually asked?
- Can you explain the method or evidence in your own words?
- What would you change if one condition in the task changed?
Use the suggested response to identify one correction, then attempt the task again without copying it. For an open-ended question, other well-supported answers may be reasonable. Ask your teacher to check interpretations or language forms where needed.
