Grade 11 English Formal Letter Writing Task

Revision activities / English study practice

Learning focus: Writing. This original Grade 11 English exercise gives you a task, a suggested response and a follow-up challenge. It is classroom practice, not an official assessment paper.

Understand the idea

A formal letter should identify its purpose quickly, provide necessary detail and make a courteous, specific request. Formatting must support the message.

Try the activity

Draft a letter to your headteacher requesting permission for a school debate. What information belongs in the body?

Attempt your response before opening the guidance. Show the steps, textual evidence or reasons that support your answer; a final answer alone may hide a misunderstanding.

Self-assessment checklist

This is your own assessment, not automatic marking.

Self-assessed checklist: 0/4

Show suggested answer and reasoning

State the request, proposed date and venue, educational purpose, supervision arrangements and what approval is needed. Close politely. Include the relevant addresses, date, salutation and subject according to the format taught.

Follow-up challenge

Revise your draft to remove repetition. Check whether the reader can identify the requested action without rereading the letter.

Review your work

  • Did you answer the question actually asked?
  • Can you explain the method or evidence in your own words?
  • What would you change if one condition in the task changed?

Use the suggested response to identify one correction, then attempt the task again without copying it. For an open-ended question, other well-supported answers may be reasonable. Ask your teacher to check interpretations or language forms where needed.
