Revision activities / Core Mathematics study practice
Learning focus: Measurement and Geometry. This original Grade 11 Core Mathematics exercise gives you a task, a suggested response and a follow-up challenge. It is classroom practice, not an official assessment paper.
Understand the idea
A scale compares a drawing length with the corresponding real length. Area scale factors are the square of the length scale factor.
Try the activity
A rectangular room measures 6 cm by 4 cm on a 1:100 plan. Find its real dimensions and floor area.
Attempt your response before opening the guidance. Show the steps, textual evidence or reasons that support your answer; a final answer alone may hide a misunderstanding.

Show suggested answer and reasoning
Each centimetre represents 100 cm, or 1 m. Real dimensions are 6 m by 4 m, so the area is 24 m². Multiplying the drawn area by 100 only would be incorrect because both dimensions scale.
Follow-up challenge
Repeat using a 1:50 plan with the same drawn dimensions. State all conversions before calculating the area.
Review your work
- Did you answer the question actually asked?
- Can you explain the method or evidence in your own words?
- What would you change if one condition in the task changed?
Use the suggested response to identify one correction, then attempt the task again without copying it. For an open-ended question, other well-supported answers may be reasonable. Ask your teacher to check interpretations or language forms where needed.
