Grade 11 Mean Median and Probability Practice

Revision activities / Core Mathematics study practice

Learning focus: Statistics and Probability. This original Grade 11 Core Mathematics exercise gives you a task, a suggested response and a follow-up challenge. It is classroom practice, not an official assessment paper.

Understand the idea

An average summarises a data set in a particular way. Probability compares favourable equally likely outcomes with all such outcomes in a specified sample space.

Try the activity

For the values 2, 3, 3, 4 and 8, calculate the mean and median. If one value is selected uniformly from the five entries, find the probability it is 3.

Attempt your response before opening the guidance. Show the steps, textual evidence or reasons that support your answer; a final answer alone may hide a misunderstanding.

Self-assessment checklist

This is your own assessment, not automatic marking.

Self-assessed checklist: 0/4

Show suggested answer and reasoning

The sum is 20, so the mean is 4. The middle ordered value is 3, so the median is 3. Two of the five entries are 3, giving probability 2/5.

Follow-up challenge

Replace 8 with 28. Describe which average changes more and why. Distinguish selecting an entry from selecting one of the distinct numerical values.

Review your work

  • Did you answer the question actually asked?
  • Can you explain the method or evidence in your own words?
  • What would you change if one condition in the task changed?

Use the suggested response to identify one correction, then attempt the task again without copying it. For an open-ended question, other well-supported answers may be reasonable. Ask your teacher to check interpretations or language forms where needed.
