Revision activities / Core Mathematics study practice
Learning focus: Numbers and Algebra. This original Grade 11 Core Mathematics exercise gives you a task, a suggested response and a follow-up challenge. It is classroom practice, not an official assessment paper.
Understand the idea
A linear equation represents a relationship with an unknown raised to the first power. Define the unknown before translating the words into mathematical operations.
Try the activity
A notebook costs x shillings. Three notebooks and a pen costing KSh 40 total KSh 250. Find the notebook price.
Attempt your response before opening the guidance. Show the steps, textual evidence or reasons that support your answer; a final answer alone may hide a misunderstanding.

Show suggested answer and reasoning
3x + 40 = 250. Subtract 40 to obtain 3x = 210, then divide by 3: x = KSh 70. Check: 3 × 70 + 40 = 250.
Follow-up challenge
Change the total to KSh 280 and solve again. Explain why 3(x + 40) would describe a different purchase.
Review your work
- Did you answer the question actually asked?
- Can you explain the method or evidence in your own words?
- What would you change if one condition in the task changed?
Use the suggested response to identify one correction, then attempt the task again without copying it. For an open-ended question, other well-supported answers may be reasonable. Ask your teacher to check interpretations or language forms where needed.
