Revision activities / Biology study practice
Learning focus: Anatomy and Physiology of Plants. This original Grade 11 Biology exercise gives you a task, a suggested response and a follow-up challenge. It is classroom practice, not an official assessment paper.
Understand the idea
Water movement in plants can be studied by observing a coloured water pathway or comparing water loss under controlled conditions. A conclusion should match what was actually measured.
Try the activity
A learner places a leafy shoot in coloured water. Colour later appears in the leaf veins. What does this observation support, and what does it not prove?
Attempt your response before opening the guidance. Show the steps, textual evidence or reasons that support your answer; a final answer alone may hide a misunderstanding.

Show suggested answer and reasoning
It supports the presence of a water-conducting pathway through the stem into the leaves, normally associated with xylem. The observation alone does not measure the rate of transpiration or prove how sugars are transported.
Follow-up challenge
Plan a comparison using similar shoots under different airflow conditions. Identify the independent variable, one dependent measurement and at least three conditions to keep constant.
Review your work
- Did you answer the question actually asked?
- Can you explain the method or evidence in your own words?
- What would you change if one condition in the task changed?
Use the suggested response to identify one correction, then attempt the task again without copying it. For an open-ended question, other well-supported answers may be reasonable. Ask your teacher to check interpretations or language forms where needed.
