Grade 11 Digestion and Absorption Case Exercise

Revision activities / Biology study practice

Learning focus: Anatomy and Physiology of Animals. This original Grade 11 Biology exercise gives you a task, a suggested response and a follow-up challenge. It is classroom practice, not an official assessment paper.

Understand the idea

Digestion breaks large food molecules into smaller molecules. Absorption transfers digested nutrients across a surface into the body’s transport systems; these are different processes.

Try the activity

Explain why a large intestinal surface area helps absorption. Give two structural features that support the explanation.

Attempt your response before opening the guidance. Show the steps, textual evidence or reasons that support your answer; a final answer alone may hide a misunderstanding.

Self-assessment checklist

Self-assessed checklist: 0/4

Show suggested answer and reasoning

Villi and microvilli increase the available surface area. A thin epithelial barrier shortens diffusion distance, while transport away from the surface helps maintain favourable concentration conditions. Different nutrients use different transport mechanisms.

Follow-up challenge

Draw an annotated villus and trace the route of an absorbed glucose molecule. Avoid describing absorption as the physical movement of whole food pieces into blood.

Review your work

  • Did you answer the question actually asked?
  • Can you explain the method or evidence in your own words?
  • What would you change if one condition in the task changed?

Use the suggested response to identify one correction, then attempt the task again without copying it. For an open-ended question, other well-supported answers may be reasonable. Ask your teacher to check interpretations or language forms where needed.
