Revision activities / Biology study practice
Learning focus: Cell Biology and Diversity. This original Grade 11 Biology exercise gives you a task, a suggested response and a follow-up challenge. It is classroom practice, not an official assessment paper.
Understand the idea
Magnification compares image size with actual size. Both measurements must use the same unit before division; a larger image is not automatically a more detailed image.
Try the activity
A cell image is 40 mm long and the actual cell is 0.08 mm long. Calculate magnification and give one difference between magnification and resolution.
Attempt your response before opening the guidance. Show the steps, textual evidence or reasons that support your answer; a final answer alone may hide a misunderstanding.

Show suggested answer and reasoning
Magnification = image size ÷ actual size = 40 ÷ 0.08 = 500 times. Resolution is the ability to distinguish nearby points as separate; magnification enlarges their appearance.
Follow-up challenge
Repeat the calculation when actual size is given as 80 micrometres. Sketch a results table with units and explain why a blurry image cannot be repaired merely by enlarging it.
Review your work
- Did you answer the question actually asked?
- Can you explain the method or evidence in your own words?
- What would you change if one condition in the task changed?
Use the suggested response to identify one correction, then attempt the task again without copying it. For an open-ended question, other well-supported answers may be reasonable. Ask your teacher to check interpretations or language forms where needed.
