Grade 11 Wave Speed Calculation Practice

Revision activities / Physics study practice

Learning focus: Waves and Optics. This original Grade 11 Physics exercise gives you a task, a suggested response and a follow-up challenge. It is classroom practice, not an official assessment paper.

Understand the idea

Wave speed, frequency and wavelength are related by v = fλ. Frequency counts cycles per second and wavelength measures the separation of equivalent points on successive waves.

Try the activity

A wave has frequency 50 Hz and wavelength 0.4 m. Calculate speed and period.

Attempt your response before opening the guidance. Show the steps, textual evidence or reasons that support your answer; a final answer alone may hide a misunderstanding.

Self-assessment checklist

This is your own assessment, not automatic marking.

Self-assessed checklist: 0/4

Show suggested answer and reasoning

Speed is 50 × 0.4 = 20 m/s. Period is 1/f = 1/50 = 0.02 s. Check that the wavelength is in metres before using the stated units.

Follow-up challenge

If frequency doubles while speed stays constant, find the new wavelength. Explain why changing frequency does not always imply that speed changes in a fixed medium.

Review your work

  • Did you answer the question actually asked?
  • Can you explain the method or evidence in your own words?
  • What would you change if one condition in the task changed?

Use the suggested response to identify one correction, then attempt the task again without copying it. For an open-ended question, other well-supported answers may be reasonable. Ask your teacher to check interpretations or language forms where needed.
