Grade 11 Electromagnet Investigation Planning

Revision activities / Physics study practice

Learning focus: Electricity and Magnetism. This original Grade 11 Physics exercise gives you a task, a suggested response and a follow-up challenge. It is classroom practice, not an official assessment paper.

Understand the idea

An electromagnet’s behaviour depends on features such as current, coil turns and core material. A fair investigation changes one factor while controlling others.

Try the activity

Plan a low-voltage investigation of how coil turns affect the strength of an electromagnet. What would you measure and control?

Attempt your response before opening the guidance. Show the steps, textual evidence or reasons that support your answer; a final answer alone may hide a misunderstanding.

Self-assessment checklist

This is your own assessment, not automatic marking.

Self-assessed checklist: 0/4

Show suggested answer and reasoning

Use a consistent measure such as the number of identical paper clips lifted. Vary coil turns while monitoring current and keeping core, wire arrangement, test method and duration comparable. Repeat trials and record results.

Follow-up challenge

Explain why increasing turns may also change resistance and current. Practical work must be supervised with a suitable low-voltage supply; disconnect between trials and do not use mains electricity.

Review your work

  • Did you answer the question actually asked?
  • Can you explain the method or evidence in your own words?
  • What would you change if one condition in the task changed?

Use the suggested response to identify one correction, then attempt the task again without copying it. For an open-ended question, other well-supported answers may be reasonable. Ask your teacher to check interpretations or language forms where needed.
