Grade 11 Motion Graph Calculation Exercise

Revision activities / Physics study practice

Learning focus: Mechanics and Thermal Physics. This original Grade 11 Physics exercise gives you a task, a suggested response and a follow-up challenge. It is classroom practice, not an official assessment paper.

Understand the idea

A speed–time graph shows how speed changes. Its gradient gives acceleration and the area under it gives distance when the quantities and units are appropriate.

Try the activity

An object speeds up uniformly from rest to 12 m/s in 4 s. Find acceleration and distance travelled.

Attempt your response before opening the guidance. Show the steps, textual evidence or reasons that support your answer; a final answer alone may hide a misunderstanding.

Self-assessment checklist

This is your own assessment, not automatic marking.

Self-assessed checklist: 0/4

Show suggested answer and reasoning

Acceleration is (12 − 0)/4 = 3 m/s². The area under the triangular speed–time graph is ½ × 4 × 12 = 24 m.

Follow-up challenge

Draw and label the graph. Compare the distance with an object moving at a constant 12 m/s for 4 s and explain why the answers differ.

Review your work

  • Did you answer the question actually asked?
  • Can you explain the method or evidence in your own words?
  • What would you change if one condition in the task changed?

Use the suggested response to identify one correction, then attempt the task again without copying it. For an open-ended question, other well-supported answers may be reasonable. Ask your teacher to check interpretations or language forms where needed.
