Revision activities / Literature in English study practice
Learning focus: Oral Literature. This original Grade 11 Literature in English exercise gives you a task, a suggested response and a follow-up challenge. It is classroom practice, not an official assessment paper.
Understand the idea
Oral literature is communicated through performance as well as words. Voice, gesture, audience response and setting can affect how a narrative is understood.
Try the activity
Choose a familiar oral narrative. Explain how two performance features could strengthen its telling.
Attempt your response before opening the guidance. Show the steps, textual evidence or reasons that support your answer; a final answer alone may hide a misunderstanding.

Show suggested answer and reasoning
A pause can build suspense before an important event, while a change in voice can distinguish characters. Gesture may clarify action and audience participation may reinforce a refrain. Explain the effect of each feature in a specific moment.
Follow-up challenge
Create a performance plan with stage directions. Distinguish a feature of the narrative’s content from a feature of its delivery.
Review your work
- Did you answer the question actually asked?
- Can you explain the method or evidence in your own words?
- What would you change if one condition in the task changed?
Use the suggested response to identify one correction, then attempt the task again without copying it. For an open-ended question, other well-supported answers may be reasonable. Ask your teacher to check interpretations or language forms where needed.
