Revision activities / Literature in English study practice
Learning focus: Fiction and Non-Fiction. This original Grade 11 Literature in English exercise gives you a task, a suggested response and a follow-up challenge. It is classroom practice, not an official assessment paper.
Understand the idea
Literary analysis should connect a claim about character with an event or quotation and an explanation. The narrator’s account and the author’s personal views are not automatically identical.
Try the activity
Write a paragraph showing that a character in a text studied in class is conflicted. What evidence would make the argument convincing?
Attempt your response before opening the guidance. Show the steps, textual evidence or reasons that support your answer; a final answer alone may hide a misunderstanding.

Show suggested answer and reasoning
Identify a decision involving competing motives. Describe a relevant action or brief quotation accurately, then explain the tension. Acknowledge a detail that complicates your claim where appropriate.
Follow-up challenge
Revise a paragraph that only retells the plot. Underline the claim, evidence and interpretation in different colours.
Review your work
- Did you answer the question actually asked?
- Can you explain the method or evidence in your own words?
- What would you change if one condition in the task changed?
Use the suggested response to identify one correction, then attempt the task again without copying it. For an open-ended question, other well-supported answers may be reasonable. Ask your teacher to check interpretations or language forms where needed.
