Grade 11 Spreadsheet Formula Practice

Revision activities / ICT study practice

Learning focus: Productivity Tools. This original Grade 11 ICT exercise gives you a task, a suggested response and a follow-up challenge. It is classroom practice, not an official assessment paper.

Understand the idea

A spreadsheet formula uses cell references to calculate from data. Relative references change when copied, while absolute references keep a specified row or column fixed.

Try the activity

If B2 contains quantity 4 and C2 contains unit price 75, write a formula in D2 for the line total. How would you total D2 to D6?

Attempt your response before opening the guidance. Show the steps, textual evidence or reasons that support your answer; a final answer alone may hide a misunderstanding.

Self-assessment checklist

This is your own assessment, not automatic marking.

Self-assessed checklist: 0/4

Show suggested answer and reasoning

Use =B2*C2 to obtain 300. Use =SUM(D2:D6) for the range total. Confirm that quantities and prices are numeric and that the range includes all intended rows.

Follow-up challenge

Add another row and check whether the total still covers the data. Explain why typing a calculated answer into D2 would not update automatically when quantity changes.

Review your work

  • Did you answer the question actually asked?
  • Can you explain the method or evidence in your own words?
  • What would you change if one condition in the task changed?

Use the suggested response to identify one correction, then attempt the task again without copying it. For an open-ended question, other well-supported answers may be reasonable. Ask your teacher to check interpretations or language forms where needed.
