Revision activities / History and Citizenship study practice
Learning focus: Themes in Kenyan History and Citizenship. This original Grade 11 History and Citizenship exercise gives you a task, a suggested response and a follow-up challenge. It is classroom practice, not an official assessment paper.
Understand the idea
A historical source should be examined for origin, purpose, date, audience and the claim it can support. A primary source can still be selective or biased.
Try the activity
You have a colonial official’s report and an oral account about the same event. How would you compare them?
Attempt your response before opening the guidance. Show the steps, textual evidence or reasons that support your answer; a final answer alone may hide a misunderstanding.

Show suggested answer and reasoning
Identify when and why each was produced, the perspective represented and the evidence each supplies. Look for agreement and disagreement, then seek corroboration. Neither source should be dismissed or accepted solely because of its type.
Follow-up challenge
Create a source table separating observed facts, claims and interpretation. Explain one question that each source cannot answer on its own.
Review your work
- Did you answer the question actually asked?
- Can you explain the method or evidence in your own words?
- What would you change if one condition in the task changed?
Use the suggested response to identify one correction, then attempt the task again without copying it. For an open-ended question, other well-supported answers may be reasonable. Ask your teacher to check interpretations or language forms where needed.
