Grade 11 Contemporary Citizenship Media Analysis

Revision activities / History and Citizenship study practice

Learning focus: Themes in Contemporary History and Citizenship. This original Grade 11 History and Citizenship exercise gives you a task, a suggested response and a follow-up challenge. It is classroom practice, not an official assessment paper.

Understand the idea

Contemporary history uses recent evidence that may be incomplete or contested. Responsible analysis separates reporting, opinion and unverified claims.

Try the activity

Two news reports give different explanations for a public protest. How should a learner investigate the difference?

Attempt your response before opening the guidance. Show the steps, textual evidence or reasons that support your answer; a final answer alone may hide a misunderstanding.

Self-assessment checklist

This is your own assessment, not automatic marking.

Self-assessed checklist: 0/4

Show suggested answer and reasoning

Compare publication dates, named sources, direct evidence and the language used. Check whether each report distinguishes verified events from interpretation, and consult additional reliable accounts before drawing a conclusion.

Follow-up challenge

Write a neutral summary showing what is agreed, disputed and unknown. Do not present a social-media claim as verified simply because it is widely shared.

Review your work

  • Did you answer the question actually asked?
  • Can you explain the method or evidence in your own words?
  • What would you change if one condition in the task changed?

Use the suggested response to identify one correction, then attempt the task again without copying it. For an open-ended question, other well-supported answers may be reasonable. Ask your teacher to check interpretations or language forms where needed.
