Grade 11 Import Cost and Exchange Rate Exercise

Revision activities / Business Studies study practice

Learning focus: Government and Global Influence in Business. This original Grade 11 Business Studies exercise gives you a task, a suggested response and a follow-up challenge. It is classroom practice, not an official assessment paper.

Understand the idea

An imported product’s local cost can change with exchange rates as well as freight, duties and other charges. A currency conversion alone is not a complete landed-cost calculation.

Try the activity

A supplier charges USD 200. Compare the converted amount at KSh 130 and KSh 140 per dollar, excluding other costs.

Attempt your response before opening the guidance. Show the steps, textual evidence or reasons that support your answer; a final answer alone may hide a misunderstanding.

Self-assessment checklist

This is your own assessment, not automatic marking.

Self-assessed checklist: 0/4

Show suggested answer and reasoning

The amounts are KSh 26,000 and KSh 28,000. The second is KSh 2,000 higher. These are hypothetical rates for practice, not current market quotations or final import costs.

Follow-up challenge

List further costs a trader would need to verify before pricing the goods. Explain why a stronger foreign currency can squeeze a fixed local selling margin.

Review your work

  • Did you answer the question actually asked?
  • Can you explain the method or evidence in your own words?
  • What would you change if one condition in the task changed?

Use the suggested response to identify one correction, then attempt the task again without copying it. For an open-ended question, other well-supported answers may be reasonable. Ask your teacher to check interpretations or language forms where needed.
