Revision activities / Electricity study practice
Learning focus: Electrical Machines. This original Grade 11 Electricity exercise gives you a task, a suggested response and a follow-up challenge. It is classroom practice, not an official assessment paper.
Understand the idea
A motor converts electrical energy into mechanical energy, while a generator converts mechanical energy into electrical energy. Both involve electromagnetic principles but their energy inputs differ.
Try the activity
Compare a fan motor and a hand-driven generator by input, useful output and one energy loss.
Attempt your response before opening the guidance. Show the steps, textual evidence or reasons that support your answer; a final answer alone may hide a misunderstanding.

Show suggested answer and reasoning
The fan motor receives electrical energy and produces rotating mechanical motion. The hand-driven generator receives mechanical energy and produces electrical energy. Both can lose useful energy through heating, sound and friction.
Follow-up challenge
Draw energy-flow diagrams with losses. Explain why a generator cannot supply energy indefinitely without an energy input.
Review your work
- Did you answer the question actually asked?
- Can you explain the method or evidence in your own words?
- What would you change if one condition in the task changed?
Use the suggested response to identify one correction, then attempt the task again without copying it. For an open-ended question, other well-supported answers may be reasonable. Ask your teacher to check interpretations or language forms where needed.
