Revision activities / Community Service Learning study practice
Learning focus: Action Research. This original Grade 11 Community Service Learning exercise gives you a task, a suggested response and a follow-up challenge. It is classroom practice, not an official assessment paper.
Understand the idea
Action research follows a practical question through baseline observation, action, evaluation and reflection. Evidence should be collected consistently before and after an intervention.
Try the activity
Plan an investigation into avoidable litter around a classroom. State a question, a baseline measure and one action.
Attempt your response before opening the guidance. Show the steps, textual evidence or reasons that support your answer; a final answer alone may hide a misunderstanding.

Show suggested answer and reasoning
Ask whether clearly labelled disposal points reduce litter. Count visible litter items in the same area at the same time on several school days, introduce the disposal points, then repeat the count using the same method.
Follow-up challenge
Explain how weather, cleaning routines or special events could affect results. Use safe observation only; learners should not handle sharp, medical or unknown waste.
Review your work
- Did you answer the question actually asked?
- Can you explain the method or evidence in your own words?
- What would you change if one condition in the task changed?
Use the suggested response to identify one correction, then attempt the task again without copying it. For an open-ended question, other well-supported answers may be reasonable. Ask your teacher to check interpretations or language forms where needed.
