Revision activities / Agriculture study practice
Learning focus: Crop Production. This original Grade 11 Agriculture exercise gives you a task, a suggested response and a follow-up challenge. It is classroom practice, not an official assessment paper.
Understand the idea
A rotation changes crops on the same plot over successive seasons. A useful plan considers crop families, nutrient demand, pest carry-over, soil cover and the farmer’s market.
Try the activity
A school grows maize every season on one plot. Suggest a three-season sequence including a legume and explain two benefits.
Attempt your response before opening the guidance. Show the steps, textual evidence or reasons that support your answer; a final answer alone may hide a misunderstanding.

Show suggested answer and reasoning
One possible sequence is maize, beans, then a suitable leafy vegetable from a different family. Beans can contribute biologically fixed nitrogen through the crop system, while changing crop families can interrupt some pest cycles. The exact sequence must suit local rainfall and soils; a legume does not automatically remove the need for fertiliser.
Follow-up challenge
Add a simple calendar showing planting, residue management and a soil-test decision. Explain why rotating two crops from the same family may give limited pest control.
Review your work
- Did you answer the question actually asked?
- Can you explain the method or evidence in your own words?
- What would you change if one condition in the task changed?
Use the suggested response to identify one correction, then attempt the task again without copying it. For an open-ended question, other well-supported answers may be reasonable. Ask your teacher to check interpretations or language forms where needed.
