Grade 11 River Erosion Explanation Practice

Revision activities / Geography study practice

Learning focus: Natural Systems and Processes. This original Grade 11 Geography exercise gives you a task, a suggested response and a follow-up challenge. It is classroom practice, not an official assessment paper.

Understand the idea

A landform explanation should connect a physical process to the conditions in which it operates. Naming processes without explaining their effect gives an incomplete answer.

Try the activity

Explain how abrasion contributes to river channel erosion and identify one factor that can influence it.

Attempt your response before opening the guidance. Show the steps, textual evidence or reasons that support your answer; a final answer alone may hide a misunderstanding.

Show suggested answer and reasoning

Abrasion occurs when sediment carried by a river wears its bed or banks. The quantity and nature of the load, flow conditions and resistance of the channel material can influence its effect.

Follow-up challenge

Compare abrasion with hydraulic action. Draw an annotated sketch and distinguish erosion from deposition so the processes are not treated as interchangeable.

Review your work

  • Did you answer the question actually asked?
  • Can you explain the method or evidence in your own words?
  • What would you change if one condition in the task changed?

Use the suggested response to identify one correction, then attempt the task again without copying it. For an open-ended question, other well-supported answers may be reasonable. Ask your teacher to check interpretations or language forms where needed.
